When Darkness Comes by John Anthony Miller

Have you ever stood up for someone at work?  In When Darkness Comes by John Anthony Miller one of the main characters, Rachel does this not just to her boss but also to the French Police and the Nazi officers!  (the epic scene is on page 122) And she’s only 16!  I loved this historical fiction set in France during WWII.  Several things set this book apart from all the other historical fiction WWII books.  First, the dynamic duo cousins named Paul and Claire.  Not many books celebrate cousins and this one beautifully portrays their familial love from the time they were children romping in the fields to adults fighting the Nazi occupiers in France.  Second, not many books give you the perspective of the “bad guy” yet in When Darkness Comes we meet the astute businessman Julian Junot.  This deeply layered character will have you in tears.  Third, the strong heroine Rachel shows not just self-sacrifice but self-love.  She reminded me ...

The Whisper Man by Alex North

How do you make sure someone knows even if you get angry you’ll always still love them?  The audiobook of Whisper Man which is narrated by British actor Christopher Eccleston does this perfectly.  I loved the sweet enduring relationship between the father and son in The Whisper Man by Alex North.  The Dad, Tom always told his son, Jake, even if he was angry he still loved him.  As sweet as the father/son duo were, the story still freaked me out.  There’s a serial killer on the loose who kidnaps young boys and then later they wind up dead.  Pete is a detective working on current cases which they are worried relate back to a serial killer Pete captured 20-so years ago.  Pete feels personally responsible to figure out the connection between the cases which includes the “Whisper Man” who sneaks outside kids’ windows taunting them.  This story will freak you out as a parent or teacher.  The twist in the story which involved Tom’s wife/Jake’...
